Many of these so-called ‘authentic’ Tuscan experiences are created around luxurious travel packages. They offer beautiful settings in the northern Chianti region. Lots of cooking courses take place in hotels or villas and are a return to dormitory-style accommodations and sterile institutional cooking. Imagine that, Italians practicing capitalism.

CHICAGO • In Chicago, you have the choice between two zoos: the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Brookfield Zoo. The Lincoln Park zoo is quite small by our zoo’s standards, but near Lake Michigan and with an intimate urban vibe. The Brookfield Zoo is massive, with elaborate exhibits, but it’s about 14 miles from downtown.

OMAHA, Neb. • The cliché is that Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium has everything from aardvarks to zebras. It does have zebras (of course), and it does have aardvarks, and if you’ve never seen an aardvark you really should because those things are totally bizarre.
